What Happens If You Don’t Love Your Photos Right Away

Let’s Talk About That First Glance

There’s a very human moment that can happen when you first open your gallery. You scroll, pause, and suddenly see an image that feels unfamiliar. Your stomach might do a tiny flip as your brain tries to make sense of what it’s seeing.

If this has ever happened to you, nothing is wrong. It doesn’t mean the session missed the mark. It simply means you’re seeing yourself the way others already see you. That can feel surprising at first.

As a former art teacher and counselor, I’ve watched people react to their own images for many years. The first glance is instinct. The second glance is understanding. The third glance is often recognition.

I’ve felt this too. I’ve looked at portraits of myself and seen only my perceived flaws. But giving those portraits time, I’ve returned to find bits of my personality shining through—and realized that’s where the beauty is found. Portraits often show us the parts of ourselves we’re still learning to embrace.

Why We Judge Ourselves Too Quickly

We’re used to selfies and mirror images

Most of us see our own face most often through a wide-angle phone lens or a bathroom mirror. Selfies and our cameras on Zoom gently distort facial proportions at the edges. Mirrors reverse everything. These small shifts shape what we believe our face looks like.

A portrait lens is different. It’s more balanced and accurate. It shows the version of you that your friends and family see every day. Sometimes that feels like receiving a compliment—a little tender, a little unexpected.

Our brains cling to familiarity

Your brain prefers what it knows. When it sees something even slightly different, it pauses. This pause isn’t about beauty. It’s about biology.

I’ve had so many clients hesitate at first, only to message me days later saying they keep returning to the photo they weren’t sure about. Time allows the unfamiliar to become understood. And often, all it takes is a close friend saying “I love this one” for everything to shift.

I deliver my favorites from your session.

This means you receive a larger gallery and don’t have to go through a selection process. I understand that images will resonate with you at different times. What feels like a maybe today can become a meaningful favorite next month. The way you see yourself also evolves. Your images should support that evolution. Sometimes, all it takes is showing a portrait to a person you love and trust.

There are photos of my own family that barely caught my attention when I first took them. Then one afternoon, months later, one of my sons pointed to a photo and said “I love this.” Suddenly I saw the sweetness I’d overlooked. Moments resonate differently over time. I want you to have the room to discover that for yourself.

If Something Feels Off, Here’s how I can help you

First, I listen.

When a client shares that something feels off, I take it seriously. I slow down and make space for the conversation. Your concerns matter, especially when they’re shared with kindness and respect.

I put my heart into every session. A long time ago, I took a class from photographer Yan Palmer. She said she tries to fall in love with every human she photographs. That idea shaped me. When I photograph someone, I look for their spark, their softness, their strength. I want you to see that in your images too.

I help you understand what you may be reacting to

Sometimes the discomfort comes from seeing yourself in a way you’re not used to. Portraits show a perspective that’s more accurate than a selfie or mirror. That adjustment takes time.

And sometimes it’s simply preference. Not every image will be your personal favorite. That’s completely normal. Your gallery includes more images than you’ll ever need so you can choose the ones that resonate most.

I refine images as needed

Every image I deliver is fully polished with care and intention. I always try to err on keeping my edits very natural, but sometimes people want just a bit more.

If you want additional small adjustments after reviewing your gallery, that’s part of my process. We can even meet on Zoom or FaceTime. I’ll edit one photo on the screen right in front of you. That way, you can tell me just how much further you want me to go with lightening under your eyes or whatever it is.

If a request is going to be very time-consuming, I’ll let you know the additional fee before moving forward. You’ll always know what to expect.

Why It Almost Always Works Out

When you feel supported, respected, and unhurried, things tend to fall into place. Once your brain has time to understand the new perspective, the unfamiliar often becomes something you appreciate.

Clients tell me all the time that the images they were unsure about became the ones they loved most. That shift never gets old for me.

You are more photogenic than you realize, more interesting than you give yourself credit for, and far more yourself than you often see in the mirror.

FAQs

What if I don’t love a specific image?

Totally normal. This is why your gallery includes many images. You get to choose which ones you want to use.

What if seeing myself this way feels uncomfortable?

Portraits show a perspective you may not be used to. Your brain may need time to adjust. This is very common.

Will you be upset if I share concerns?

Not at all. I value communication, especially when it’s shared with kindness and respect. It helps me support you better.

Can you edit an image more?

Yes. Small tweaks are welcome. If you’d like to guide the process to tell me how far to go, we can meet on Zoom or FaceTime. If a request becomes very time-consuming, I’ll let you know the additional fee before continuing.
