Finding Light: Gratitude when the world feels heavy
November always brings me back to gratitude.
Not the Pollyanna kind that pretends everything’s fine, but the real kind — the kind that notices the good even when things feel messy and hard.
And honestly? Gratitude is everywhere if we look for it. Neighbors helping one another. Friends showing up with meals or checking in just because. People using their businesses as tools for kindness and creativity. Communities that keep showing up for strangers simply because it’s the right thing to do.
It’s easy to get caught up in the heaviness of the world. Families are struggling to put food on their tables. People are being unfairly targeted in our own city. But even with all that, I keep noticing these moments of compassion. People choosing to care, to act, to keep their hearts open.
What Photography Has Taught Me About Gratitude
Photography has always been my reminder to look for light. It’s there, even when the shadows seem bigger. Every portrait and story reminds me that hope is resilient (and maybe a little stubborn, too).
When I photograph someone, I’m not chasing perfection. I’m looking for connection. The spark that says, this is who I am, even when life feels complicated. Those are the moments that remind me why storytelling matters so much.
Gratitude as Connection
Lately, I’ve been focusing my gratitude on connection. Listening with heart. Sharing a meal. Reaching out to someone I don’t know as well. Speaking up when it matters.
The small things add up. They always do. A kind word. A little help. A quick message that says, “Hey, I thought of you.” These are the pieces that build community. They’re the reason I believe gratitude isn’t just a feeling — it’s a way of showing up.
(And if you’ve been following my monthly newsletter, you know there’s a music recommendation tied to this thought — a little soundtrack for gratitude and good trouble.)
Choosing Gratitude (Even When It’s Messy)
So here’s to creating gratitude and light, one kind, brave, maybe even slightly mischievous act at a time.
I’m really thankful for this community and for the people who remind me that we’re all doing our best to show up and care.
However messy or imperfect it looks, that’s what gratitude really is — noticing the good, holding space for the hard, and choosing to keep your heart open anyway.
